• Mark making is done with dripped paint that creates individual spots and/or lines with varying widths

The artist will generally have some uncertainty as to the shape of the splayed brush/rag, so the splotches that are applied will have a level of indeterminacy. Subsequent splotches after an initial splotch might be similar to the initial splotch, and rhythm can be created with this repetition. By turning the rag or re-splaying the brush, an artist can be less intentional, moving toward more accidental mark making.
