• Where subjects/shapes meet one another, a line is scratched into the painting in order to define the edge

Scratched-in edges introduce a distinct abstract element that removes representational pieces from naturalistic depiction. The quality of the scratched-in line can also be an expressive element as it clearly reveals the action of the artist’s hand.

Either the ground surface of the painting is revealed by the scratching, or a previous layer of paint is revealed.

Scratched-in edges can serve to isolate one subject or shape from another, perhaps creating a sense of the isolation of each character or component of the piece.
