The subject/shape might be depicted with a fairly simple background, or it might be made most prominent by making it much larger, more colorful, better lit, harder edged, and more detailed than any other subjects or shapes found in the piece.
The main subject/shape is highlighted while it is also presented within a context that might indicate that the subject is not entirely isolated. We see that subject exists in relationship to a particular setting.
An artist might design a piece this way in order to compel the viewer to identify with the prominently featured subject while also allowing the viewer to appreciate that the subject has a relationship with others or with a wider world.
A work of art might also feature a dominant subject in order to show a particular subject's dominance over those around them or over an entire region or world.
